How To Disable MySite or MyLinks  link in SharePoint
by Yaroslav Pentsarskyy

Now that SharePoint is being used quite widely to implement Internet/intranet sites - there is an increasing urge for business users to remove SharePoint specific components from the site.

One of them is MySite link, which is part of the out of the box implementation allowing users to create their site under the portal. This article explains how to disable/enable this feature using best practice (no-hack) way.

In order to turn off or disable the MySite or MyLinks functionality you need to be an Sharepoint administrator first of all.

1. Go to the SharePoint Central Administration.
2. Click on the link for Shared Services Administration (If you have more than one SSP, select the one that is running the MySites functionality).

3. Under "User Profiles and My Sites" click "Personalization Services Permissions"

4. You will see screen similar to the one below (click on image to see full size):

5. Select the group you want to limit the functionality for.

NOTE: You may want to block mysites for everyone in this group except new group that you can create and allow mysite. By Default, you will see that all the "NTAuthority\Authenticated Users" have mysite permission.

6. Once you select an appropriate group click Modify Permissions of Selected Users.
In the next screen you will see a list of checkboxes,
NOTE: To disable MySites uncheck "Create Personal Site" and to disable MyLinks uncheck "Use Personal Features"

When clicked OK - the settings will be applied over all of the collections using SSP.

Next thing you know, your links will be disabled depending on the option you're chosen.
