(Alan Cooper) October 2007 saw the general availability of IBMs Information Management System Version 10 (IMS 10). The IMS Database Manager and the IMS Transaction Manager both originated in 1968, and were created to support the building of Saturn V rockets for the Apollo Space Mission. Since then, IMS has continuously evolved to provide state-of-the-art facilities, and its use has extended out into a large variety of industries from car manufacturing to parcel tracking and, of course, to banking and insurance. For example, approximately 80 percent of the largest retail banks in the U.S., Germany, Japan, and Australia use IMS for their core banking. Most large insurance companies in the U.S., Asia Pacific and Europe run IMS for their policy billing and claims systems.
