Privacy and Business Intelligence…
…a problematic match? In today’s show on SSWUGtv, I talk about a recent CNet look at a specific privacy policy issue as it relates to data mining and selling of information from social networking sites (check out the show for specifics). I wanted to bring this up here to get your feedback on how big of an issue this could be for your own company.

If your company has information on file, information about sales, trends, usage issues, problem reports, whatever – this could impact how you can use that information. If the general public’s understanding how information is used is that they "own" information that is the result of their interaction with you – and that they should have some say in how that information is used, I can see where this would significantly impact many a Business Intelligence project.

I can also see where a misunderstood data mining project – misunderstood by the public at large – could go dreadfully wrong and cause all sorts of public relations headaches for a company as well.

Where is the line drawn in your eyes? When is data no longer "owned" or controlled by the customer (I’m not talking about HIPAA or other truly private/personal information) and when is it just "data" that can be mined and learned from without regard for its use? I’m not condoning the data that was released on searches, nor the data and methods that Rapleaf allegedly uses, but it does beg the question. Where is the line?

Drop me a note and let me know your thoughts on how this might impact your business
